Original inspiration for the Whistle Stop Cafe in Fried Green Tomatoes by Fannie Flagg. Starting from a hot stand, it was bought by Miss Bess Fortenberry, Flagg’s aunt, in 1932. Fortenberry sold it at the beginning of 1973 to Billy and Mary Jo McMichaels, who replaced it with a new structure in July 1980, and expanded into the adjacent closed hardware store in 1990. Bought out in 2000 by Jim Dolen, who has kept in the same, including the famous signature dish of the novel’s title.
